To strengthen the capability of agricultural scientists in West Africa to generate technology for the sustainable productivity of intensified rice-based cropping systems to improve the well-being of poor farm families and conserve and enhance the natural resource base. Research focuses on rice grown in mangrove swamps, inland valleys, upland conditions, and irrigated conditions.

--------To The Projects Executed
1. Analysis of environmental effects on expression of root penetration QTLs in Upland Rice, and development of PCR markers for QTL selection in drought resistance breeding
2. C04 Support to plant genetic resources programmes and regional networks in Sub-Saharan Africa
3. C12 Linking conservation and use
4. Characterisation and Control of Rice Stripe Necrosis: A new viral disease of rice in the Americas
5. Co-ordinated regional in-situ screening to identify varieties with durable resistance to rice yellow mottle virus
6. Cultivar competitiveness and interactions with on-farm seed priming for integrated weed management
7. Development of in-vitro techniques for characterisation of plant pathogenic strains of Rhizoctonia solani (sensu lato)
8. GC2: Delivery Of Genetic Resources: The International Network For Genetic Evaluation Of Rice (INGER)
West Africa Rice Centre (WARDA) is a premier research centre for rice development in Sub-Saharan Africa. It serves as hub for rice-related R&D networks in the region. The New Rice for Africa (NERICA), which is bringing hope to millions of poor people in Africa, was developed by WARDA and its partners. The success of NERICA rice varieties has helped shape the Centre2E8s future direction, extending its horizon beyond west and central Africa into Eastern and Southern Africa.
